Welcome to South of Barahona
Once you pass Barahona's southernmost military checkpoint on the highway heading towards Pedernales, things begin to feel a bit more wild: the road hugs the peninsula on the right and there's a deep-blue, highly underrated sea on the left. Some of the best hotels and resorts in the southwest sit on rocky outcrops along this route, all within 20km of Barahona and all with stupendous views. Eventually the adjoining seaside villages of Bahoruco and La Ciénaga emerge: two typical small communities in the heart of larimar-mineral country, with friendly locals and gravelly beaches used for mooring boats rather than swimming. From there things take a dramatic turn as the highway crests at one of the most beautiful landscapes in the southwest. An impossible swirl of cerulean-turquoise sea commands your attention as the road rolls into tiny, aptly named Paraíso, and Los Patos beyond, home to a heavenly beach.
