U'mista Cultural Centre

Top choice museum in Alert Bay

This must-see longhouse-like facility proudly displays dozens of culturally priceless indigenous artifacts confiscated when potlatch ceremonies were outlawed in Canada. Distributed to museums and collections around the world, the cultural centre has been slowly negotiating their return and the main gallery here is a spine-tingling celebration of their efforts (and ongoing work). Summer programs include book readings and cedar bark weaving demonstrations (check the Facebook page for upcoming events) while the on-site gift shop is a treasure trove of ethically-sourced First Nations art.
