Bellevue, on the eastern shores of Lake Washington, is an upscale burg with high-income housing, attractive parks and some interesting shops and boutiques. Civic and social life centers on Bellevue Sq, at Bellevue Way NE and NE 8th St, the shopping mall that sets the tone for downtown and the surrounding communities. Across from the mall, the Bellevue Art Museum features changing exhibits of contemporary Northwest art.
North of Bellevue on I-405 is Kirkland, known for its lakefront business district, marinas and antique shopping malls. Some of the best public access to Lake Washington is along Lake Ave W. Lots of waterfront restaurants are found here, some with docks for their boat-transported customers. East of Kirkland is Redmond, a sprawling suburb and the center of Seattle's high-tech industry.
