A few miles north of Madrid on Hwy 14, Cerrillos still has one foot in the Old West. With unpaved streets threading through an adobe town relatively unchanged since the 1880s, it’s home to what may have been the first mine in North America, which started extracting turquoise around AD 100, and reached its peak – under different management – in the 19th century.
