Welcome to Negombo to Kalpitiya
Roughly halfway, the fishing town of Chilaw has a strong Roman Catholic flavour, with elaborate statues of saints and cardinals in the centre.
About 7km south of Chilaw, pop into the roadside Murugan (Kataragama) Temple, a Hindu shrine with building-sized statues of Vishnu and Hanuman.
Munneswaram, 5km to the east of Chilaw, has another place of Hindu pilgrimage. The central of the three shrines is dedicated to Shiva.
The tiny village of Udappuwa, 12 kilometres north of Chilaw, has a hectic morning fish market and an important Hindu temple with a large gopuram (gateway tower). In August festival devotees here and at Munneswaram test their strength by walking on red-hot coals.
