Welcome to Central Gran Canaria
Best explored behind the wheel, the winding roads looping up and into the island's lofty central terrain allow you to fully appreciate the topographical and climatic diversity of Gran Canaria. A world away from the undulating, arid dunes and resorts of the south, the high-altitude centre of the island can have you turning a bend in sharp sunlight into a deep and impenetrable fog bank. Go back round the corner and the sunlight will still be there. A huge and vastly varied region, this is what Gran Canaria is all about. Charming small hill towns like San Bartolomé de Tirajana are precursors to treats such as Tejeda, a beautiful village on the edge of the vast Caldera de Tejeda. Press on, however, to lofty, cave-dwelling Artenara, the island's highest hill village, where the most supreme views on the island range out from a series of miradors.
