Welcome to Al Ghariya

In recent years, this area in northeastern Qatar has become known for its marine-conservation efforts. Fuwairit Beach is a designated nesting area for the extremely endangered hawksbill turtles, which return to lay their eggs here every summer. There are also excellent birdwatching possibilities, with terns and gulls gathering on the sandbars. Al Ghariya is named after the Arabic word for cave; the area is supposedly full of them, but they are off limits to visitors.
