A new Vice series called Gaycation follows Canadian actress Ellen Page and her best friend Ian Daniel as they travel to the world to learn about LGBTQ culture in different countries.
Page, known for her roles in the 2007 film Juno and 2015’s Freeheld, is hosting the travel show on the recently-launched TV channel Viceland, from the popular digital media group Vice.
The show premiered on 2 March and follows the pair as they document their experiences learning about LGBTQ communities in Japan, Brazil, Jamaica, Canada and the US.
In a promo for the show, Page explains that she is “on a journey to explore what it means to be gay, lesbian, bi- or trans all around the world”. She said they want to document the struggles, “feel the love and the hate”, and “bring home every human story we encounter along the way”.
In the first episode, they head to Japan. According to Vice, the pair heads to the country “find out what it's really like to identify as LGBT in Japan and meet some of the people struggling to find their voice in a country that refuses to give them equal rights under the law”.
