Welcome to Ba Kelalan
The village is built on a hillside in an attractive valley; when the paddy fields are flooded, the effect of the mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding mountains is spectacular. This is a deeply religious community: at the head of the large grassy playing field that acts as the town square sits the Borneo Evangelical Mission church, with Sunday services that last most of the day. The church seems incongruously large for such a small town, but at times it's filled to bursting with worshippers who come to Ba Kelalan to climb nearby Gunung Murud (2423m), known to some as prayer mountain.
Ba Kelalan is also one of Sarawak's best spots for for birdwatching. Twitchers come here to spot ruddy cuckoo doves, oriental bay owls and broadbills.
