Welcome to Phyang
Pretty Phyang village is a large, green expanse of layered, tree-hemmed barley fields, 20km from Leh in the next parallel valley west. There's a big gompa, a fortress ruin and an ancient Guru Lakhang, but it's almost entirely uncommercialised, with neither hotel nor restaurant. You're most likely to come here to unwind at the Hidden North Guest House, where a young Ladakhi–Italian family has created a delightfully relaxing getaway, with panoramic views, good food and options to take wildife- and birdwatching trips or to hike towards the Nubra Valley. There are also farmstays in several local homes.
