Founded in 1411, Patan was the Gujarat capital for six centuries. Today, it is best known for the UNESCO-listed Rani-ki-Vav step-well (entry ₹600), considered to be the oldest and finest in Gujarat. Built in 1063 by Rani Udayamati to commemorate her husband, Bhimdev I, it's embellished with intricate sculptures and carved pillars across seven levels. The stairs feature an unusual geometric pattern. Give yourself time to take in this architectural marvel in detail, especially the intricate patterns that also appear on patola saris.
You can only descend the steps of one half of the step-well. Right down in the depths of the well, ask someone to point out the carving of Sheshashayi-Vishnu, in which Vishnu reclines on the thousand-hooded serpent Shesha, sleeping through the infinity between ages.
The step-well is set in a large, landscaped park in the northwest corner of the city. It's signposted.
