Welcome to Paruku Indigenous Protected Area & Lake Gregory
In September 2001, two weeks after the High Court of Australia awarded Native Title to the Tjurabalan people of the northern Tanami, the Paruku Indigenous Protected Area was founded. The IPA includes the permanent wetlands of Lake Gregory and covers two former pastoral leases within the ceded lands some 200km south of the Great Northern Hwy. It's similar to a national park, with conservation regions of high cultural and environmental significance. Visitors are welcome, access is 4WD only and permits are required.
