Wybalenna Historic Site

Historic Site in Flinders Island

A chapel and cemetery are about all that remain of this misguided settlement, built to ‘care for’ relocated mainland Tasmanian Aboriginal people. Between 1834 and 1847, more than 150 people died here from poor food, disease and despair. Among them was Manalargena, chief of the Trawlwoolway tribe, whose headstone can be seen. The site is on Aboriginal land: be respectful.
