The name Berri derives from the Meru Aboriginal term berri berri, meaning 'big bend in the river', and it was once a busy refuelling stop for wood-burning paddle steamers. These days Berri is an affluent regional hub for both state government and agricultural casual-labour agencies; it's one of the best places to chase down casual harvest jobs. The abandoned 'Big Orange' – one of Australia's iconic 'big' roadside tourist lures – awaits re-juicing on the edge of town.
