Welcome to Winton
Winton is a satisfying and friendly country town in the heart of cattle, sheep and dinosaur country – this is the best base from which to explore central Queensland's remarkable prehistoric fossil finds. The town also does its best to make the most of its 'Waltzing Matilda' connections. Banjo Paterson reputedly wrote the Aussie anthem after a visit here, and it was first performed at the North Gregory Hotel.
Elderslie St is a colourful streetscape of old timber pubs, historic buildings and opal shops, so there's plenty of photogenic period charm here.
