Finch Hatton Gorge is a remarkable, prehistoric place set in a rugged subtropical rainforest. Hills of farmland disappear into a lush gorge dotted with volcanic boulders and buzzing with bird and insect life. It can feel like you've stepped through a geographical black hole into another physical dimension.
A gorgeous 1.6km walking trail leads to Araluen Falls, with its tumbling waterfalls and swimming holes, and a further 1km hike takes you to the Wheel of Fire Falls, another cascade with a deep swimming hole. Both these falls tend to be busy with locals on weekends.
