About 32km west of the gem and fossicking base of Mt Surprise, the partly sealed Explorers’ Loop (check road conditions) takes you on a 150km circuit through old gold-mining towns. At Einasleigh have a drink at the local pub and admire amazing miniature doll's house collection before strolling to the Copperfield Gorge. Forsayth, the terminus of the Savannahlander train, also has a pub and a colourful history filled with gold-mining boom-bust tales and picaresque characters.
But the real highlight out here is around 40km from Forsayth via a dirt road. On a private cattle station, the startling private spring-fed oasis of Cobbold Gorge is one of those unexpectedly beautiful outback finds. Cobbold Gorge Village runs three-hour bushwalking tours that culminate in a boat cruise through the stunning narrow gorge.
Back on the Savannah Way, Georgetown is the endpoint of the loop, with a handful of attractions, including a dazzling minerals exhibition.
