Welcome to Woods Hole
Indeed, Woods Hole is home to one of the most prestigious marine research facilities in the world. Research at the private, nonprofit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI; pronounced 'hooey') has run the gamut, from exploring the sunken Titanic to studying global warming. With dozens of buildings and laboratories, and staff and students numbering about 1000 (including world-class scientists and engineers, and Nobel laureates), it's the largest independent oceanographic institution in the US. A number of other scientific facilities and organizations have a presence in Woods Hole.
