Welcome to Ksar Ghilane

The Romans got here first of course – the ksar (traditional fortified granary) that gives the oasis its name is the ancient fort of Tisavar, once a desert outpost, renamed by the local Berbers in the 16th century and which now lies abandoned on a low hill about 2km west of the settlement.

Hot springs feed a small swimming hole in the oasis, shaded by trees. There are impressive dunes between the oasis and Tisavar, particularly once you get among them, and of course they’re especially wonderful at sunset and sunrise.
