Gabès is bit of an oddity – a busy port town with a large industrial sector, but which also has its own extensive palmeraie (palm grove) on the outskirts of town. It makes a good base from which to explore the ksour (traditional fortified granaries) and troglodyte houses to the south. It has a long stretch of beach that it does little to take advantage of, though it's popular with residents and is good for swimming.
