The M41, with its scraps of pavement barely clinging to the surface, broadens out just northwest of Rushan and the view across to Afghanistan becomes less intimate with islands of no-man's land in the middle of the river. In late spring, tufts of coral-coloured tamarisk line the roadside and whole fields turn blue with wild flowers.
