St Kitts’ south is a scrubby, wild and hilly peninsula ringed by sublime sandy beaches. There are no villages down here and, until recently, no residential development to speak of. That all changed with the development of Christophe Harbour, which centers on a superyacht marina and includes luxurious villas, a members-only beach club and a Tom Fazio–designed golf course. The long-awaited opening of the Park Hyatt is also bringing more traffic down here.
Heading south on the main road, which runs for 8 miles from Frigate Bay, you cross over steep St Timothy’s Hill before shooting downhill via a new tunnel that opened in 2016. Hold onto the steering wheel, for your breath will likely be taken away by the view that unfolds as you exit the tunnel. The road itself – called Kennedy A Simmons Hwy after the islands' first prime minister – has been completely resurfaced.
