Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

This good-looking place abounds in charm and history: General Franco supposedly stayed here in 1936, launching the coup that started the Spanish Civil War from room No 3 (and reputedly left without paying!). Service comes with a smile, rooms have been refurbished and those with balconies overlooking the plaza are just a wee bit (€10) more expensive.

There's an atmospheric bar and restaurant downstairs.
