If you haven’t brought a picnic, excellent food is available near the entrance of Avgas Gorge at Viklari, better known as the Last Castle. For €12 you get delicious kleftiko (slow-roasted lamb), accompanied by salad and chunky homemade chips. You eat at heavy stone tables under grapevines, surrounded by petrified-rock 'sculptures’, lovingly nurtured pot plants and a pretty garden.
Viklari has been providing lunch to hungry hikers since 1989. Look for signs to the ‘Last Castle’ from the coastal road and enjoy stunning views of citrus and banana groves running down to the sea. Note you have to drive off-road to get here, but you don't need a 4WD, if you drive with care.
