Welcome to Guiuan
The literal and metaphorical end of the bumpy road to the southeastern tip of Samar, Guiuan (ghee-won) is recovering well after being flattened by Typhoon Yolanda, which made its first landfall here. Protected by Calicoan Island, Guiuan was fortunately spared the type of storm surge that killed so many people elsewhere – miraculously fewer than 200 people died here as record 400km/h winds pummelled the town. But the storm nonetheless destroyed or heavily damaged most buildings.
Today reconstruction is ongoing, but the town is very much up and running again and its people are welcoming.
