Borongan is a genuine beach town. The spiritual centre is honey-brown Baybay Beach, where barbecue shacks and vendors of all stripes line a long boulevard. Head here to catch the sunrise, jog, bodysurf or, in the late afternoon, imbibe cheap beer with the locals. Baybay Beach has five 'stations' – Baybay 1 is to the south, Baybay 5 to the north.
The capital of Eastern Samar Province, Borongan is a good base for travellers or surfers who want to explore Samar's largely untouched Pacific coastline. While the southern bits of the province took a direct hit from Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, Borongan and points north were spared heavy damage.
