Welcome to Buir Nuur
But you have to get here first. And getting here, in a word, sucks. The area around Buir Nuur is Mongolia's equivalent of Arabia's Empty Quarter – a seriously remote and seemingly endless arid sea.
The lake is located by Mongolia’s eastern thumb and is well known for its large stocks of fish and birdlife, particularly in the northeast area around the Khalkhiin Gol delta. Given that the northern shore of Buir Nuur is in China, most of the fish end up on the plates of Chinese restaurants – a source of much bitterness on the Mongolian side.
