Aoshima (青島) is both a tiny palm-covered island (1.5km in circumference) and the name of the adjacent mainland town, one of Japan's more relaxed communities. Surfers and sunbathers come for its lovely beaches, strewn with sand dollars after rough storms, and it's also a training ground for Japanese sports teams. All in all, it's a laid-back alternative to staying in central Miyazaki.
