Welcome to Hula Valley

The swamps of the Hula Valley were once notorious for malaria, but a massive drainage program completed in 1958 got rid of the anopheles mosquitoes – and destroyed one of the country’s most important wetlands. In recent years about 10% of the old lake has been restored, in part to protect the water quality of the Sea of Galilee.

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) was founded in 1953 by people galvanised into action by the draining of the Hula.
