Iran

The most distinctive of Zafaraniyeh's adobe-faced buildings is the beehive-shaped ice house. Up until the 1970s locals cut up thick slabs of compacted winter snow and stored them inside between layers of straw. In the summer these blocks would be carried out into the fields to use as cool drinking water. The interior is currently empty but a plan to build a teahouse here has been mooted.
