South of Chelgerd, the Zardkuh Glaciers, at an altitude of 4050m, are beginning to appear on the occasional tour itinerary, although facilities at present are not in place to do more than admire from a safe distance. Discovered only in 1933, the largest glacier is 500m wide and 150m long and forms an unusual feature in the heart of a predominantly tropical (as opposed to polar) desert region.
