Welcome to Zangla
Forming an arc of traditional homes around a wide circle of terraced barley fields, Zangla is the last major road-linked Zanskar village east of Padum. On a bare crag at its southwestern corner is the small hilltop fortress palace, and at the far end of the village, there’s a small, friendly Buddhist nunnery from which an alternative trail leads north to Km33 on the road to Pidmo Bridge (5km beyond).
Zangla makes a fine if bumpy half-day jeep excursion from Padum. En route, admire scenes of geological strata and make the winding trip 2.6km up to Stongdey Gompa for morning views of the superbly jagged mountain horizon.
