Welcome to Zangla
Forming an arc of traditional homes around a wide circle of terraced barley fields, Zangla is the last major road-linked Zanskar village north of Padum. On a bare crag at its southwestern corner is the small hilltop fortress palace, and at the far end of the village, there’s a small, friendly Buddhist nunnery from which an alternative trail leads north to Km33 on the road to Pidmo Bridge (5km beyond).
Zangla makes a fine if bumpy half-day jeep excursion from Padum. En route it's worth detouring up to Stongdey Gompa for superb morning views of the breathtaking valley.
