Newcastle Waters

The fascinating ghost town of Newcastle Waters, 3km west of the highway, has atmospheric, historic buildings. These include the Junction Hotel, cobbled together from abandoned windmills in 1932. The town, largely abandoned in the 1960s, draws vast flocks of waterbirds after heavy rain. It's worth a detour here to break up the long journey north or south.
