Welcome to Tucumán & Around
Though the country’s second-smallest province, Tucumán has played a significant role in Argentina’s story. It was here that independence was first declared, and the massive sugar industry remains of great national economic importance. It makes sense then that Tucumán city is full of heat and energy, benefiting from a recent influx of young professionals, in complete contrast to the lung-cleansing air of Tafí del Valle up in the hills. Beyond, Argentina’s most important pre-Columbian site is Quilmes, on the Cafayate road. South of Tucumán province, Santiago del Estero is an enjoyable backwater with music in the air and siesta time on the calendar.
