The must-do day trip from Interlaken is the Schynige Platte plateau (1967m), which provides a natural balcony on the Bernese Alps and lakes Thun and Brienz, glinting far below. A relic from a bygone era of slow travel, the cog-wheel summit train allows the views to unfold little by little. At the top, a botanical garden thick with colour and fragrance awaits. Hiking trails teeter along the ridge and through meadows chiming with cowbells. Paragliders launch themselves from the plateau in summer.
