North of Chur, Bündner Herrschaft is known as wine country, especially the region east of the Rhine River called Fünf Dörfer (Five Villages) – Fläsch, Maienfeld, Jenins, Malans and Zizers. This is the canton's premier wine region, dominated by the Blauburgunder (Pinot noir) grape variety that yields some memorable reds. A gentle wander through this area of vineyards is most enjoyable.
The peaceful town of Bad Ragaz with its numerous sculptures and thermal waters is the centre for what is now being marketed as 'Heidiland' – the surrounding region of 17 communities and 37 small towns. Although Heidi was a fictional figure, the region has laid claim to her and you're likely to run into all sorts of Heidi-related places.
