Welcome to Banská Bystrica
Banská Bystrica’s headline attraction, a saucer-shaped museum to the Slovak national uprising, is reason enough to visit this pretty town south of Veľká Fatra National Park. Time-trapped Banská Štiavnica, 40km south, snatches more visitors, but Banská Bystrica is easily as beautiful. The town centre is a forest of Baroque spires, buttercup-yellow clock towers and Gothic churches, with a cafe-lined pedestrian promenade running through. Against all this colour, Soviet-era reliefs and the concrete silhouette of the museum create a moody contrast.
