Welcome to San Ramón
Only 12km from Matagalpa, the small highland town of San Ramón feels a world away, with a rural sensibility and a relaxed vibe. While the town itself isn't of particular interest to travelers, the real reason to come here is to get an authentic taste of rural life among the hardworking farmers in the surrounding hills, and there are half a dozen working coffee farms nearby that offer tours and sometimes accommodations. Like many coffee fincas in northern Nicaragua, San Ramón's were hit hard by the outbreak of coffee rust disease in 2013 and some local farmers lost up to 80% of their crops. But growing new, hardier varieties has seen a return to almost full production at most farms in the area and the future looks bright.
