One of the highest towns in Nicaragua, charming San Rafael del Norte is surrounded by soaring, fissured peaks with coffee fincas on their shoulders. Founded in the 1660s, it is rich in culture and a great jumping-off point for hikes and outdoor activities high in the mountains. The town also holds an important place in Nicaragua's national consciousness, being the birthplace of the country's first national heroine, Blanca Aráuz, also known as Mrs Augusto César Sandino.
