Welcome to San Juan de Oriente
This attractive colonial village – known to some as the sister 'bewitched village' of Catarina – is renowned for its artisan traditions. San Juan de Oriente, indeed, has been in the pottery business since before the Spanish conquest, and 95% of the residents are artisans. While production of inexpensive and functional pottery for local consumption is still important, the recent generations of craftsmen have upped their game. A number of the local masters are international award winners who exhibit abroad, and their vases, plates, pots and other creations are exquisitely decorated and very fairly priced.
You can spend hours here, wandering around, watching the masters at work and perhaps even trying your own hand at pottery making at a foot-spun pottery wheel.
