On a lovely hairpin curve and swerve in the Seine, some 40km southeast of Rouen, lies pretty Les Andelys (the ‘s’ is silent), crowned by the magnificent, disconsolate and brooding ruins of Richard the Lionheart’s hilltop castle, which affords supreme views over the river and the town. The classical French Baroque artist Nicolas Poussin was born in Les Andelys in 1594.
