Welcome to Los Ríos
Los Ríos, Chile's Región XIV, was created in 2007 after years of bickering over it being embedded within the Lakes district despite not sharing a whole lot of cultural or geographic similarities with its direct Southern neighbor. The capital, Valdivia, is a fun university town with a distinct German waft about the air and is the anchor for a region rich in culture and beer – both in historical terms (Kunstmann beer hails from here) and in cervezas artesanales. Valdivia's coast is rife with biodiverse wetlands, Valdivian temperate rainforest and one of Chile's newest national parks, Parque Nacional Alerce Costero. But the gem of the region is inland at Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve, a conservation and ecotourism fantasyland that not only harbors an impressively long list of natural thrills, but offers you a bevy of surreal hotels and other accommodations to rest your weary soul after a day of high-octane outdoor adventure.
