Zeehan owes its existence to mining. In 1882 Frank Long discovered silver and lead on the banks of Pea Soup Creek, and in no time what had been a small mining field became known as 'Silver City', with a population of 10,000 people. Service industries included 27 pubs, the famous Gaiety Theatre and even a stock exchange. However, times have changed: Zeehan now has a one-horse, tumbleweed-town vibe. But it is worth pausing to visit the West Coast Heritage Centre and amazing old Gaiety Theatre.
