Welcome to West MacDonnell Ranges
Looking for all the world like some gnarled desert reptile strung out across the desert, the West MacDonnell Ranges (the West Macs to their friends) are worthy desert companions to the better-known Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon away to the southwest. Beautiful when taken as a whole, the West Macs are nonetheless all about the detail. Below rampartlike summits, deep gashes snake into the heart of the escarpment in a series of gorges filled with water and wildlife. Part of the stirring Tjoritja / West MacDonnell Ranges National Park, a land of great beauty, filled with sacred Dreaming stories, the range can easily be visited on a day trip from Alice Springs. But you'll be rewarded a hundred times over if you stay longer.
The West MacDonnell Ranges lie within the traditional lands of the Arrernte people.
