Den Bosch ('s-Hertogenbosch)

Introducing Den Bosch ('s-Hertogenbosch)

The full name of Noord Brabant's capital is 's-Hertogenbosch (Duke's Forest), which is understandably not used often. Den Bosch has two dynamite sights: a remarkable church and a great museum dedicated to its namesake artist. It also has unique tunnel canals you can explore.

The significance of the city's full name held true in the 12th century when there was a castle and a large forest here. Both are long gone. It was hotly contested during the Eighty Years' War and you can still see where the lines of fortifications followed the shape of the canals. It's the birthplace of the 15th-century painter Hieronymous Bosch, who took his surname from the town.
