About an hour southeast of Puerto Maldonado is Infierno (Hell!), home and hub of activity for the Ese’eja tribespeople. It’s a lively, spread-out settlement, which has a reputation for its ayahuasca (derivative of a hallucinogenic jungle vine) rituals, conducted by local shamans. Lonely Planet does not recommend taking ayahuasca and those who do so do it at their own risk. Arrange your own transport here via car or motorbike: mototaxis won’t make the rough journey.
