Sanur is a slightly upmarket sea, sun and sand alternative to Kuta. The white-sand beach is sheltered by a reef. The resulting low-key surf contributes to Sanur’s nickname ‘Snore’, although this is also attributable to the area’s status as a haven for expat retirees. Some parents prefer the beach at Sanur because its calmness makes it a good place for small children to play.
Sanur was one of the places favoured by Westerners during their prewar discovery of Bali. Artists Miguel Covarrubias, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur and Walter Spies, anthropologist Jane Belo and choreographer Katharane Mershon all spent time here.

Bali & Lombok travel guide
The mere mention of 'Bali' evokes thoughts of a paradise. It's more than a place; it's a mood, an aspiration, a tropical state of mind.
In keeping with the local demeanour, the white-sand beach is sheltered by a reef and the surf is sedate. At low tide the beach is wide, but the sea is shallow and you have to pick your way out over rocks and coral through knee-deep water. At high tide the swimming is fine, but the beach is narrow and almost nonexistent in places.
Sanur's fickle breaks (tide conditions often don't produce waves) are offshore along the reef. The best area is called Sanur Reef , a right break in front of the Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel. Another good spot is known as the Hyatt Reef , in front of, you guessed it, the Bali Hyatt. You can get a fishing boat out to the breaks for 200,000Rp per hour.
Bali is like no other destination in the world. Its rich culture plays out at all levels of life, from the exquisite flower-petal offerings placed everywhere to the processions of joyfully garbed locals to the otherworldly traditional music and...
Sanur destination guides
Sanur’s beachfront walk was the first in Bali and has been delighting locals and visitors alike from day one. Over 4km long, it curves past resorts, beachfront cafes, wooden fishing boats under repair and quite a few elegant old villas built decades ago by the wealthy expats who fell under Bali’s spell.
