Shaka’s kraal (fortified village), KwaBulawayo, once loomed over this beautiful valley, but today Nkwalini Valley is regimented with citrus orchards and cane fields rather than Zulu warriors. Still, it makes for a lovely drive over the hills and there are several spots of note to visit, including Shakaland.
Also worth stopping at is Coward's Bush, just across the road from KwaBulawayo. Today it's just another marker, but it was once where warriors who returned from battle without their spears, or who had received wounds in the back, were executed. Further west is the Mandawe Cross, which was erected in the 1930s against the wishes of the Zulu. There are excellent views from the hill.
