The grandeur of Sandomierz's Old Town, with the impressive Gothic town hall sprouting from its Rynek (main square), remains relatively undiscovered. Immaculate buildings painted warming hues of brown, orange and yellow, many festooned with elegant wrought-iron balconies, line the lanes as locals nonchalantly wander by.
The town's position on a knoll above the Vistula River and wide plains beyond gives it commanding views and a certain regal air of being above it all. Yet, the town remains relatively untouristy; while popular towns like Kazimierz Dolny groan under the weight of weekend mobs, Sandomierz serenely carries on. However, new restaurants and hotels hint that the secret's out: Sandomierz is one exquisite little highlight of eastern Poland.
