Going strong since 1910 – when the hotelier of the Kaiserhof connected his premises to the 11th-century defensive tower next door – and persisting through the GDR years, this hushed hideaway scores a perfect 10 on the ‘romance metre’. Walls of polished oak, beautiful table settings and immaculate service complement Ulrich Rösch’s flavour-packed concoctions, which finely balance the trendy and the traditional.
Expect dishes such as glazed Arctic char with stewed lettuce, ricotta and elderflower – not exactly common fare in Thuringia.
